Purchasing Plants at the farm-the ultimate way to buy a great plant! Buying
daylilies through the mail in O.K. and picking them at the local garden
center is limited, but having them dug for you is the best way to get the
cultivar that you've been looking for. If you come during our peak
bloom season (roughly July 20 to August 15) you will find most of
Read on for more information about the experience...... 1) When you arrive at the farm park out in our grass parking area, you will drive by our old farm buildings and daylily fields. Once parked make your way to one of our information stations and pick up a catalog/clipboard and a digging order. You may also want to sign up for a raffle plant and read about daylilies at these stations. 2) With your clipboard in hand begin to look through the gardens for that special plant. You are welcome to walk any and allow of the rows. The daylily plants in the gardens are labeled with white aluminum tags and should be easily viewable. If you are interested in purchasing a plant in the field, check the catalog for price and availability. Then simply right down the name and price on your digging order once you have found the information. Unfortunately, not all plants in the fields are for sale (some are reserved for hybridizing, others are to short in number to offer for sale, still others are not worthy garden plants). We generally have signage that indicates areas not for sale (seedling field and display gardens). 3) Please read the catalog descriptions of the plant to make sure it matches the flower you are looking at. Since we have many thousands of plants and labels in the field, it is easy to confuse what plant goes with which label. Solaris farms staff can help you with this if needed, we don't want to send you home with the wrong plant.
5) Once you have written down your selections, deliver your digging order to the cashier and they will check your order for possible sold out items and accuracy. The cashier will total your order and ask you to pay at this time. 6) Your digging order will then be given to a label writer/digger. Once your labels have been made your plants will be dug. You are welcome to join the digger and help select the plants, but you will need to move fast! Or you can sit and relax in the shade of our arbors until your order is dug. 7) Diggers will label all of your plants with the correct name and place your plants in plastic bag for transport home. 8) When your order is ready, the digger will call for you to look over the plants they have dug. At this time the digger will suggest you trim all foliage back to 6" to 8" to insure an easy transplant (the plants will regrow their foliage within a few weeks and will establish more quickly with this treatment). 9) Take your plants home, keep them cool and plant them as soon as possible. |
