Opihi Red. Irvine/Sutherland. 2001. Seedling # 455/9. Lutea Hybrid. Parentage: SH32 x ‘Zephyrus’, (SH32 is Golden Era x Chinese Dragon). Semi-double flowers are deep red and ruffled. Plants are slow to grow and remain relatively small (36″ high and wide after 10 years in Wisconsin), but are not difficult to grow. Flowers are carried on solid stems and face to the side. Foliage is dark green and of average size for Lutea Hybrids. A rarely offered plant and a good red cultivar. Grown from seed sent to New Zealand in the 1990s from Bill Seid’s hybridizing program. Ships in late September to mid-October. AGE: Field-grown, 3+ year old graft or division from larger plants – our choice of available plant material upon harvest.
