Paeonia tenuifolia. Herbaceous species.  Originating from the Crimean peninsula and adjacent areas, these plants have wonderful fine ‘fern leaf’ foliage.  They are extremely cold-tolerant and of easy culture if planted in full sun in highly drained soils.  This species is the plant most gardeners refer to as fern leaf peonies. Our species selections may include (as available) the single red form (P. tenuifolia), double red form (P. tenuifolia var. plena rubra), and a selected P. tenuifolia var. rosea form registered as ‘Kinlen’.  Paeonia tenuifolia and its various varieties and cultivars are one of the first peonies to bloom in early spring and are very resistant to freeze damage.  Plants are blooming size and are typically 14 to 18 inches in height when in bloom. Blunt, rounded root segments are sausage-like.  Plant in full sun in a well-drained location that never becomes wet.  Outstanding little plants for the rock garden or front of the border.  Blooming size divisions. Premium divisions ship late September to mid-October.
