Stephen E. Ambrose.  Anderson/Swenson.  2014.  Herbaceous hybrid.  Parentage: Anderson seedlings.   Semi-double to double red with rounded guard petals, flower 8 inches in size, one per stem. Some blooms may have a few inner petals colored ivory, with red veins. No fragrance. Fertility difficult.  Midseason bloom. Stems to 32 inches (81 cm), narrow upright self-supporting growth habit. Named for Stephen E. Ambrose (1936-2002), historian and author whose books did much to popularize American history and make it available to the ordinary citizen.  Difficult plants to divide and are slow increasers, but are spectacular.  Flowers do best with some afternoon shade. Premium divisions ship late September to mid October.
