Black Echo.  Bremer. 2022. Woody peony. Suffruticosa – Rockii hybrid lineage. Parentage:  (Angel Emily x Fujizome Goromo).   Seedling #NB-SH57.  Brilliant reddish-purple flowers carried on fine upright stems.  Petals are ruffled and creased and have small notches along their edges.  Flowers are extremely bright and are distinctive in the garden.  Dark black flares surround green carpels (with white hairs) wrapped in a red sheath.  Stigmas are bright red.  Filaments are dark violet.   Plants are relatively small in stature (to 3.5 feet in Wisconsin) and are vigorous shrubby growers.  Stems are thin and sturdy.  Leaflets are on the smaller side, but typical of P. suffruticosa cultivars.  Good stem hardiness.   Fertile both ways. Black Echo is named for the dark flares which provide deep contrast to the brilliant red-purple petal color. Ships late September to mid October.  AGE: Field grown, 4+ year old graft or division from larger plants – our choice of available plant material upon harvest.
