Black Pirate. Saunders. 1935. F1 generation lutea hybrid. 3-4 rows of huge dark red satiny petals. Flares are “black” and wide. Filaments are very dark. Stigmas bright pink; sheath lilac. Only rare side-buds. Flowers are very dark and have a shiny sheen to them. Wide, deep green foliage. Excellent. Not a vigorous plant for us, but worth growing for its stunning flowers. Stems lack winter hardiness, but produce basal shoots that bloom reliably. No fertility. Rarely available. Black Pirate is quite rare in commerce and is highly sought after by collectors or someone who wants something different in their garden. Ships in late September to mid-October. AGE: Field-grown, 3+ year old graft or division from larger plants – our choice of available plant material upon harvest.
