Heart of Darkness

Heart of Darkness.  Saunders.  1948.  F2 generation Lutea Hybrid.  Seedling #: 16385; F2 of 13011.  Saunders’ Black Pirate Group.  Very deep black-red single flowers that are lightly ruffled.  Dark red sheath and stamens.  Bright red stigmas.  Foliage is fine and deeply lobed.  Creates a large, attractive mound-shaped plant with many ground shoots. Plants often experience winter stem kill, only to be replaced by numerous ground shoots.  A collector’s plant for historic value and dark flowers. Nearly lost in commerce and rarely available.  Has usable pollen but has not produced seed to date. Ships in late September to mid-October.  AGE: Field-grown, 3+ year old graft or division from larger plants – our choice of available plant material upon harvest.
