Valley of the Giants

Valley of the Giants.  Bremer. 2023.  Rockii ssp. Rockii (linyanshani) lineage hybrid.  Parentage: (P. rockii ssp. rockii hybrid x unknown). Soft lavender single flowers are very large (8 to 10 inches) with 3 rows of petals, white sheath and stigmas.  Bold dark maroon flares enhance the entire presentation.  Petals have toothed and notched edges and are wavy.  Plants are floriferous and quite consistent.  Foliage is deep green and have long petioles with long distances between lance-like leaflets which are characteristic of the subspecies rockii ssp. rockii.  Hardy stems may be expected to endure very low temperatures and plants become well over 6 feet in height  by 6 feet in width in 10 year.  An interesting note:  Dormant vegetative bud covers are large and are like small balloons, feeling empty when squeezed during late fall and through the winter. When spring arrives beautiful stems develop from within the seemingly empty vessels.  Presumably this is an adaptation which protects buds from low temperatures and adverse winter conditions during dormancy – really interesting and great for those who enjoy a tactile experience.  Plants make excellent specimens and may be used as landscape specimens.  One of the most handsome and durable plants we grow.  This group of rockii hybrids are not widely grown in North America and will certainly see more attention for excellent habits and beauty in the future.  This plant and the species are being heavily used in our hybridizing program at this time.  Easily fertile with other rockii hybrid cultivars and suffruticosa group plants.   Produces very large shiny black seeds.  Plants become very large and tall, thus the name.    Superior and quite unique! Ships in late September to mid October.  AGE: Field grown, 4+ year old graft or division from larger plants – our choice of available plant material upon harvest.
